Roof verge repairs

Loose mortar or a damaged verge needs a repair that considers the edge tiles, fixing method and supporting detail. For Isle of Wight homes.

The verge is the exposed edge of a pitched roof at a gable. It is a prominent detail, and damage there can be visible from the ground before water appears indoors. Loose mortar, displaced components or a changed tile line deserve a specific repair assessment.

The roof edge may use a mortar finish or a dry verge arrangement. Identifying what is present helps describe the enquiry, but a distant photograph cannot establish the security of every component.

Record the affected section

Note which gable and which part of the edge has changed. If material has fallen, keep people away from the area below and record the location from a safe position. Do not push a loose piece back into place from a ladder.

Tell WWR Roofing about previous repairs and whether the concern follows recent weather or has developed gradually. Keep those observations separate from any assumption about the cause.

Look beyond the visible finish

A useful repair scope addresses the edge covering and how the relevant components are supported or fixed. Adding a fresh visible finish should not be treated as proof that the underlying arrangement is secure.

If a different verge system is proposed, establish its suitability for the existing covering and construction. Record whether the work covers one damaged section or the complete edge, and how it meets retained parts.

Agree the appearance and completion record

A new section can look different from weathered material beside it. Discuss the intended finish before approving the scope, especially where the gable faces the street.

Our roof repairs service provides the enquiry route. Read slipped and broken tiles where the verge issue also affects the adjacent covering, and retain completion photographs with the repair description.
