Chimney work
Damaged chimney brickwork
Broken brick faces and deteriorated joints are different findings. Keep the chimney repair scope tied to the condition observed. For Isle of Wight homes.
Updated
A chimney can show damaged brick faces as well as worn mortar joints. These are different parts of the masonry, and a general instruction to repoint the stack may not describe the repair needed. The condition of the units and the joints should be assessed together.
Fragments found below a chimney are a reason to keep people clear of the affected area and seek professional assessment. They should not prompt a closer inspection from a homeowner ladder.
Describe the visible change
For a WWR Roofing enquiry, identify the stack and note whether material is missing from brick faces, joints or the top of the chimney. Include any internal damp and previous repairs as separate observations.
A photograph from a safe viewpoint can show the extent visible from the ground. It cannot confirm the condition on the hidden side or establish the cause of deterioration throughout the stack.
Distinguish unit replacement from joint work
The proposal should identify damaged masonry units, areas of repointing and any other recommended work separately. The material and finish need to suit the existing construction, particularly where older fabric is retained.
If instability or wider movement is suspected, the appropriate assessment needs to precede a cosmetic repair. Fresh mortar alone is not evidence that a structural concern has been resolved.
Keep the completed repair identifiable
Record the elevations attended, materials used and any approved changes. Completion photographs are particularly useful for a stack that cannot be viewed closely from the ground.
Our chimney work service provides the enquiry route. The chimney repointing guide explains the joint-repair discussion, while repair or rebuilding looks at the evidence needed for a wider scope.
