Reusing roof tiles
Retaining existing tiles needs a clear assessment of condition, suitability and replacement allowances before a reroof is priced. For Isle of Wight homes.
Updated
Existing tiles can be part of the character of a house. When a reroof is being considered, retaining some of that covering may be worth discussing, particularly where a weathered appearance matters. The decision needs to follow the condition of the material and the proposed construction.
A roof that looks consistent from the ground can contain mixed repairs or units of different ages. Visible colour alone cannot establish how much material will be suitable to lift and reuse.
Separate the covering from the layers beneath
The scope of a reroof may concern battens, underlay or other concealed components as well as the visible tiles. Discuss which layers are being renewed and which parts of the covering are being considered for retention. Reusing tiles does not mean leaving the rest of the roof untouched.
When contacting WWR Roofing, explain which features you hope to keep and share any known repair history. That makes the intended appearance clear without assuming that every existing tile will be serviceable.
Allow for losses and matching
Some units may already be damaged; others may prove unsuitable during removal. A quotation involving reuse should explain how that uncertainty is handled and how replacements will be selected. An assumed recovery rate should not be mistaken for a guarantee.
The replacement needs to suit the roof and retained covering. Similar colour is only one consideration. Profile, dimensions and the relevant fixing details also need to be resolved in the specification.
Record the agreed finish
Identify where retained and new material may meet, especially on a prominent slope. Discuss the likely appearance rather than expecting an exact weathering match on completion.
