Comparing new roof quotations
A useful roof quotation explains the covering, access, exclusions, variations and handover documents as clearly as the total price. For Isle of Wight homes.
Updated
Two roof quotations can differ by thousands of pounds without describing the same job. One may include stripping, scaffold access and flashings; another may leave part of that work as an assumption. Comparing totals before comparing scope can reward the least complete document.
A simple side-by-side record helps. Start with the roof sections included, the specified covering and the work at ridges, eaves, verges and junctions. Mark anything not stated as “to confirm”, rather than assuming it is included.
Put product names beside the price
A product family is less useful than a named covering and system. Ask for clarity on materials, retained components and any proposed alternatives. The specification should also explain how items such as rooflights and chimney junctions fit into the overall job.
This is not an exercise in writing an installation manual yourself. It is a way to make sure the contractor’s proposal can be understood, priced and later checked against the finished work.
Agree the treatment of extras
Concealed repairs create a common gap in otherwise detailed quotations. Ask what inspection has already been possible and how additional work will be evidenced. A photograph, explanation and approved price create a better record than a verbal update delivered after the extra work is complete.
Confirm VAT, payment stages, scaffold duration and waste arrangements. Note any responsibility left with the homeowner, particularly approvals or additional surveys. If a quote contains an allowance, record what happens when the actual cost differs.
Read guarantees as documents
A long headline guarantee is not a substitute for the wording behind it. Identify who provides the cover, what is covered, what maintenance is required and how a claim would be made. Keep product cover separate from any workmanship undertaking.
Bring any unclear items to WWR Roofing before agreeing the work. Identify the roof sections, the finish you want and the related details that matter to you. A useful comparison ends with a scope you understand and an explanation of anything left outside it.
Use the new roof cost guide for context and the new roofs service for a quotation based on the property itself.
