Choosing tiles and slates for a new roof
Appearance matters, but roof pitch, the existing structure and the full product specification should guide a choice of tiles or slates. For Isle of Wight homes.
Updated
A roof covering changes the character of a house more than a small sample suggests. Colour is only part of the effect: the size of each unit, its profile and the pattern across a whole slope all influence the finished appearance.
The sensible starting point is the existing building. Photograph the roof from several public viewpoints, note any decorative ridge or verge details worth keeping, and establish whether the aim is a close match or a deliberate change. That gives a roofer a brief more useful than a colour name alone.
A sample needs a specification
Concrete, clay and slate describe different covering types. When discussing a replacement with WWR Roofing, bring photographs of the existing roof and any finish you would like to retain. The choice needs to suit the roof pitch, supporting construction and details at the edges, as well as the appearance of the house.
Request a physical sample where possible and view it outside. A phone photograph can help narrow a choice, but it should not settle an expensive order. Keep the selected product name in the contract so that a substitution requires a conversation.
Check the structure before changing the covering
Changing the covering can change the load on the roof. Have the structure and any approval requirements assessed before committing to a different material. A similar colour or profile does not establish that a replacement is suitable for the existing construction.
That makes an early suitability check valuable. Buying materials first and asking about the structure later can leave the homeowner trying to defend a choice that does not suit the building.
Keep the whole roof in the conversation
The covering should be discussed alongside flashings, ventilation, ridges and rainwater disposal. Agree which existing details will remain and which will be renewed. If matching a retained section, ask how the junction and any visible difference will be handled.
The WWR Roofing gallery provides photographs to discuss, without implying that every roof shown uses the same product. For a replacement project, take a short material shortlist into the new roof enquiry and let the property assessment refine it.
