Choosing a flat roof covering is often presented as a contest between three material names. In practice, EPDM, GRP and reinforced bitumen systems need to be considered as complete proposals, with the deck, edges, openings and insulation included.

A material that suits one extension is not automatically the right choice for the next. The useful comparison starts with the roof’s layout and use, then moves to a named product and a clear specification.

Understand what is being proposed

EPDM is a synthetic rubber membrane. GRP uses glass reinforcement with resin; reinforced bitumen roofing uses specified membrane layers. These descriptions explain the broad families, but they do not tell a homeowner which product, preparation or detail has been allowed for.

When discussing a flat roof with WWR Roofing, include the deck, edge trims, rooflights and wall junctions in the brief. A description such as “fibreglass roof” leaves important details open. The proposed system and its associated components should be clear before the work is agreed.

Compare the awkward parts

Draw attention to rooflights, wall junctions and outlets during the survey. Ask how each will be treated and whether an existing component is being retained. This makes quotations easier to compare and reduces the risk that a detail is left outside the agreed scope.

Discuss intended use too. A waterproof roof covering should not automatically be treated as a walking surface. Maintenance access and regular use are different requirements, and any protection needs to form part of the design. Leave roof access to people with suitable equipment and a safe plan.

Read the evidence behind the promise

Ask for product information and the terms of any proposed warranty. Avoid comparing a claimed lifespan for one material with a guarantee period for another: those figures describe different things. Maintenance requirements and exclusions deserve as much attention as the headline number.

Our flat roof cost article explains why a material rate alone is an incomplete budget. When discussing flat roofing work, take a short list of priorities—appearance, intended use and any known leak history—so the recommendation can be connected to the actual roof.
