Emergency roof repairs

Recording storm damage to your roof

Clear photographs, prompt contact and itemised repair records help explain an event. Cover still depends on the policy and assessment. For Isle of Wight homes.

After storm damage, an organised record can make a difficult conversation more straightforward. The purpose is to show what happened, what was observed and what work was undertaken—not to assume in advance that every roof repair is insured.

Policy wording, the circumstances and the insurer’s assessment determine cover. A roofer’s quotation is evidence about proposed work, not a decision on the claim.

Contact the insurer promptly

Contact your insurer promptly to establish the instructions for your own policy. Keep that correspondence alongside the information you share with WWR Roofing, including photographs taken safely and the dates of any urgent work. A roofing enquiry or quote should not be treated as confirmation that a claim has been accepted.

Record the claim reference, date of contact and any authorisation or next step. If instructions are given verbally, make a note and seek written confirmation where appropriate.

Keep observations accurate

Take photographs only from a safe position. Identify the location and time, and preserve the originals. Include any existing maintenance records or earlier images that help explain the roof’s prior condition.

Avoid describing a cause as certain when it has not been established. “A tile was found on the drive after the storm” records an observation. It does not, by itself, explain the condition of the whole roof or the reason the tile moved.

Separate each stage of work

Keep emergency attendance, temporary protection, investigation and permanent repair clearly described. Itemised records help distinguish the purpose and timing of expenditure. Ask the insurer about the required approval process before committing to non-urgent work.

Retain damaged-item evidence as instructed and do not rush into redecoration while the moisture problem is unresolved. Where further professional reports are requested, keep them with the claim correspondence.

Our emergency roof repairs page covers urgent roofing enquiries. The temporary repair guide explains the work stages, while the maintenance records article helps build a useful history before an emergency occurs.
