Emergency roof repairs
Dealing with a sudden roof leak
Protect people first, record what is safe to observe and give the contractor a clear description of the problem without attempting roof access. For Isle of Wight homes.
Updated
Water arriving through a ceiling turns a roof defect into an immediate household problem. The priority is to keep people clear of danger, then arrange the right help with enough information to explain what is happening.
Do not climb onto the roof, enter an unsafe loft or stand beneath a bulging or visibly unstable ceiling. Keep children and pets away from the affected area. If there is an immediate threat to life, call the emergency services.
Keep water and electrics separate
Where water is near lights, wiring, sockets or electrical equipment, keep away and obtain urgent advice from a qualified electrician. Do not touch wet fittings or approach an unsafe electrical supply. A WWR Roofing enquiry can address the roof problem, but electrical hazards need appropriate attention separately.
Move possessions only if this can be done without entering a hazardous area. A photograph is useful evidence, but no photograph is worth standing beneath damaged material or near wet electrics.
Make the first report clear
Tell the roofer the address, affected room, whether water is still entering and any visible signs of loose roof material. Describe the roof type if known, and mention access restrictions. Avoid guessing at the cause or promising that a particular part is safe to stand on.
If an insurer is involved, contact it promptly and retain the advice received. Keep the time of discovery and the details of any emergency work in one record.
Understand the purpose of the first visit
The initial attendance may focus on assessment or temporary protection, depending on the conditions and safe access. It should not be assumed to include a complete permanent repair. Ask what has been achieved, what remains and how follow-up will be arranged.
Our emergency roof repairs page provides contact details for urgent enquiries. The article on temporary and permanent roof repairs explains the distinction to keep clear once the immediate situation has been assessed.
