Gutter cleaning

Blocked downpipes

A clear gutter is only one part of the rainwater route. Downpipes and their connections need a defined place in the inspection scope. For Isle of Wight homes.

A gutter can look clean from above while the reported overflow remains unresolved. The rainwater route continues through the outlet and downpipe, and the scope of a cleaning job should say how far that route is being checked.

For homeowners, this is largely a matter of clear instructions. “Clean the gutters” may be understood as clearing the open channels alone unless outlets and downpipes are expressly included.

Follow the route on paper first

Use a photograph or simple sketch to identify the relevant gutter, outlet and visible pipe. Note where the pipe goes out of sight or connects to a drainage point. Do not dismantle the system to investigate it yourself.

For a WWR Roofing gutter enquiry, include the outlet and visible downpipe in your description. Note where the pipe disappears from view and where water escapes. That helps establish the section to discuss without assuming that a gutter clean includes concealed or underground drainage.

Distinguish accessible checks from further investigation

Ask the contractor what can be inspected within the visit and which connections fall outside the agreed work. If a problem appears to continue into underground drainage, have that finding recorded and the appropriate next step explained.

A roofline contractor’s quotation should not be assumed to include every buried drain. Equally, an inaccessible section should not be described as clear merely because no blockage was seen at the top.

Keep the repair boundary clear

Where a damaged fitting or pipe section is identified, request a separate description of the repair. The record should say whether the component was cleared, refitted or replaced. Those words describe different work and help explain the invoice.

Afterwards, retain the photographs and note whether the original overflow returns. A recurring symptom at the same outlet provides useful information for follow-up, particularly where the system includes concealed sections.

For maintenance, use our gutter cleaning service. If the assessment points to replacement components, the roofline service provides the related enquiry route. Our overflowing gutters article explains why the visible symptom should lead the investigation rather than preselect the solution.
