Leadwork
Stepped lead flashing
Understand the purpose of stepped flashing and the details to identify when a roof-to-wall junction needs attention. For Isle of Wight homes.
Updated
Where a pitched roof meets a wall, the weathering detail follows the slope while connecting with the masonry above. Stepped lead flashing is one way this junction is formed. Its outline can be visible from the ground, but appearance alone does not establish the condition of the full detail.
A leak near the wall needs an assessment that considers the covering and masonry alongside the flashing. Naming the visible metal is a useful start, not a complete diagnosis.
Give the junction a clear location
Tell WWR Roofing which roof slope and wall are involved, and where water appears indoors. Include earlier leadwork or masonry repairs if known. Photographs should show the junction in context, taken without accessing the roof.
Keep observations such as lifted material or an open joint separate from conclusions about the cause. More than one part of the construction may need consideration.
Define the extent of renewal
A local repair and replacement of the full stepped detail are different scopes. Establish what will be retained, what covering or masonry will be disturbed and how the surrounding areas will be made good.
If a quotation includes other weathering components beneath the visible flashing, retain those descriptions. Concealed parts matter to the complete arrangement even though they may not appear in a final distant photograph.
Keep the completed detail on record
Photographs with locations and the agreed material specification help explain the work later. Where a limitation or further recommendation remains, keep it separate from completed items.
Our leadwork service covers enquiries about roof junctions. Read lead flashing at roof junctions for the wider context, and lead soakers for the distinction between visible and concealed weathering components.
