Preparing a roof for winter

Use the change of season to review known defects, rainwater drainage and repair records before poor weather complicates access. For Isle of Wight homes.

Winter preparation is most useful when it begins with known information. A recurring overflow, an unresolved repair recommendation or a loose detail already photographed deserves attention before the discussion becomes an emergency call during bad weather.

The aim is not to declare a roof “winter-proof”. It is to review its condition, deal with identified needs and keep the right contact and maintenance information available.

Bring outstanding items together

Read the last inspection or repair record and list anything left incomplete. Distinguish work that was recommended from work that was actually carried out. A quotation in the folder is not evidence that the job happened.

If the same symptom has returned, note the date and location. Provide that history when arranging an assessment so the contractor can connect the new report with previous work.

Include the rainwater route

Gutters, outlets and visible downpipes should be part of the review. Observe them from a safe ground-level position and arrange appropriate cleaning or inspection where needed. The gutter maintenance guide explains why the interval should respond to the property’s experience.

Contact WWR Roofing about known roof defects while there is time to discuss access and the proposed work. Keep gutters and existing repair records in that conversation. Once severe weather arrives, leave close inspection to suitably equipped professionals and keep clear of loose material.

Make access and communication realistic

Arrange known roof repairs with enough time for assessment, materials and suitable conditions. Ask what could affect the programme and how changes will be communicated. Do not assume a date agreed before a storm guarantees safe roof access during it.

Keep the contractor’s details and insurance contact information where they can be found quickly. Store recent photographs and records together, so an urgent report can be accurate without a fresh inspection from a ladder.

Our roofing services cover repair and maintenance enquiries. For immediate problems, use the emergency roof repairs page. The maintenance record article explains how to keep a small amount of useful information throughout the year.
